Sometimes the right typeface doesn’t exist yet. We can help you make it.

A custom typeface is designed to work for your brands needs. To solve the problems that an off-the-shelf typeface can’t quite reach.

The custom route makes most sense when the typeface needs to be a distinctive pillar of the brand. Typography is an incredibly effective asset that appears almost everywhere for a brand. While it can be a bigger investment than licensing, custom type makes a very powerful difference in contributing to the memorability of a brand.

Letterforms shape how your messaging is understood. We understand this well, as we are a working brand design studio. Being based in Aotearoa New Zealand, we know the local market and its tastes well. We know what stands out on shelf, that poor language support is incredibly frustrating, and that flexibility is required to hold a brand system together.

Pricing

We are committed to fair pricing that takes into scope the wider project context.

Custom type is quoted per project, but to help provide guidance, we have a couple of scenarios that show what that looks like in practice. We like to think it sits in the same ballpark that a photoshoot might cost for the same business.

Example Scenario 1: Boutique online retailer

Needing a personality-packed hero font for use across website, advertising, and customer communications. Basic language and punctuation support, kerning, delivery format, and licence terms.

$7,500, 2 month timeline.

Example Scenario 2: Large corporate organisation

Requiring a fleshed out, eight-style family as the key brand typeface to be used extensively across website, advertising and internal comms. Extended Latin language support, full punctuation, kerning across all masters, delivery format, and licence terms.

$50,000, 9 month timeline.

Process

How it works.

  1. 01.

    Brief

Tell us what you’re building, who it’s for, and what the type needs to do.

  2. 02.

    Proposal

We’ll scope the project, and come back with a price, timeline, and what’s included.

  3. 03.

    Exploration

We design a few directions based on the brief, and align on one concept.

  4. 04.

    Drawing

Building out the full typeface — the character set, weights, spacing, kerning, checking in along the way.

  5. 05.

    Testing

A thorough audit ensuring technical compliance, spacing accuracy and language support.

  6. 06.

    Delivery

Supply of the final files, licence and any documentation your team require.

Pretty easy, right?
