Oakley Gothic

Design Notes

A workhorse sans-serif in the American tradition.

Oakley Gothic was designed to be a relatively neutral face, retaining warmth and personality, without sacrificing utility. It carries weights from ExtraLight through to Black, with mechanically slanted obliques. Originally designed as the brand typeface for the Likely Suspects’ identity and packaging practice, Oakley Gothic is named after the street in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland where the studio first began.

The letters that built America weren’t delicate, they were pressed into newsprint, stamped on crates, and painted across the sides of buildings in towns that meant business. It was typography with a job to do. Oakley takes that tradition, and works it into a new expression. It sits somewhere between a grotesk and a gothic, the functionality and consistency of a grotesk, but the subtle character of a gothic. Semi-condensed, it fits more in less space. Copywriters would love it. Ultimately, it’s a beautifully functional set of letters that bring in enough personality to keep you reading. Just like you are now, how neat. We designed it for the needs of an agency, something to populate presentation decks, clear and legible, but with enough contrast and character across the styles to allow for creative flexibility. Light feels crisp and serious, Bold has charm and warmth. We trust that you enjoy.
