Savey Sans

Design Notes

Saving New Zealand shoppers font licensing fees.

Designed with FCB Aotearoa.

Everything PAK’nSAVE does is to save its customers money. With the launch of a digital price ticketing system instore, they needed a bespoke typographic system to keep licensing costs down. Savey Sans was designed as a functional grotesque to take over the reins across the brand. Stylistically borrowing from the world’s great grotesques, we created a family that switched between condensed and regular widths with more consistent forms.

PAK’nSAVE is iconic in New Zealand, having loudly built its whole identity around not passing costs on to shoppers. FCB created Stickman in 2008, as a low-cost spokesman who can’t help himself with dad jokes. And we also built them their own typeface, to exclusively license. It’s drawn to run the full width of the business, from digital price tickets to the sides of the trolleys, switching between condensed and regular widths, while keeping its forms consistent. We looked to the great grotesques for the bones of it, then simplified until it did exactly what a supermarket needs a typeface to do: hold up at three metres, and hold up at three centimetres. It’s not flashy. It was never meant to be. Instead it saves money, ticket after ticket, aisle after aisle.
